Description

Sigurd Resell (1920–2010) was an important figure in twentieth-century Norwegian furniture design. After training as a cabinetmaker, he studied in the woodworking department of the Norwegian National College of Art, Craft and Design from 1943 to 1947. Following graduation, he joined the design office Rastad & Relling, where he worked on furniture and interior design projects. After the death of Fredrik A. Kayser in 1968, Resell became chief designer at Vatne Lenestolfabrikk, gradually shifting the company’s focus from traditional Scandinavian wooden furniture towards modern designs better suited to industrial production.

The Falcon was originally named Blankvals and was submitted by Resell to a furniture competition in 1970. After receiving second prize, the design was selected by Vatne and officially entered production in 1971. It quickly became one of the company’s principal products and helped Vatne triple its turnover within two years. The series was later expanded to include high-back and low-back chairs, a footstool and matching occasional tables.

The basic construction of the Falcon was inspired by a hammock. A canvas sling is suspended between four supporting points on the frame, with leather seat and back cushions resting on top. The sitter’s weight is distributed through this suspended structure. Rather than relying on the heavy internal framework of a conventional upholstered chair, the Falcon uses the tension of the canvas and the flexibility of the steel frame to provide support, producing a subtle rocking sensation when seated.

This example is the high-back version of the Falcon and is accompanied by a separate headrest and matching footstool. Both the chair and footstool have four-pronged chrome-plated steel bases, with canvas slings suspended from the frames by metal fittings. The dark-brown leather cushions feature button tufting and retain the creases and tonal variations acquired through long use. Compared with the later laminated beech-frame version, the chrome-plated steel construction of this example more closely resembles the original form in which the Falcon first entered production.

The steel frames, canvas slings and leather cushions can be dismantled, allowing the principal components to be repaired or replaced separately. The high backrest reclines to support the upper body, while the headrest supports the neck. The footstool employs the same suspended construction, allowing the legs to rest in a naturally elevated position. Rather than relying on ornament, the design directly expresses the relationship between its supporting frame, fittings, canvas and upholstered cushions.
