Description

Danish designer Kay Bojesen (1886–1958) began training as a silversmith at Georg Jensen’s workshop in 1907. From the 1920s onward, he gradually moved away from elaborate ornamentation and developed a modern design language characterised by simplicity, functionality and warmth, becoming an important pioneer of Danish modernism.

In addition to his silverware, Bojesen is best known for his playful wooden figures. With their rounded forms and humorous expressions, he gave traditional wooden toys a new character. Loved by children, adults and collectors alike, these figures have become Danish design classics passed down through generations.

In 1940, to celebrate the 70th birthday of King Christian X of Denmark, Bojesen created one-metre-tall Royal Life Guards, which were displayed outside his shop on Bredgade in Copenhagen. In 1942, he introduced smaller versions in the familiar size known today.

Dressed in a red uniform, dark blue trousers and a tall black bearskin hat, the Officer carries a sabre and leads the regiment. Through Bojesen’s simplified design, the traditionally dignified military figure is given a warm, humorous and playful character.
