Description

This candleholder was produced by Søholm Keramik on the Danish island of Bornholm. It belongs to the EJ64 Blue Series, designed by Einar Johansen in 1964. The series is also known as the “Blue Series,” and Model 3211 refers to this single candleholder form.

Søholm was a long-established pottery located in Rønne on Bornholm, Denmark. It was founded in 1835 by Edvard Christian Sonne and Herman Sonne Wolffsen, and produced both utilitarian ceramics and decorative pottery over a long period. The factory later became especially appreciated by collectors for its stoneware pieces and distinctive glaze designs. Einar Johansen was one of Søholm’s important designers during the 1950s and 1960s, and records indicate that he worked at Søholm from 1958 to 1966.

The piece features a deep blue glaze with iron-brown glaze runs and brown tonal variations, while the rim is finished with a dark grey-brown matte glaze, creating a calm yet striking contrast. According to available references, the deep blue glaze used for the EJ64 Blue Series was developed by Svend Aage Jensen.

The body combines deep blue, iron-brown, and matte dark brown glazes, with raised triangular geometric motifs around the sides. Its substantial stoneware body and naturally flowing glaze effects reflect the decorative character and handmade quality of Danish modern ceramics from the 1960s.

The base is marked with the model number 3211, the factory mark Søholm Denmark, and the material designation Stentøj. Measuring approximately 4 cm in height, this model is a representative single candleholder form from the EJ64 Blue Series.
