Description

Hans Bølling was a Danish designer who retained a strong sense of playfulness throughout his life. From the age of fourteen, he often stayed in the workshop until late at night, sketching, making models and experimenting with wood. For him, there was little distinction between creating and playing, and many of his humorous and lively designs grew out of this spirit of free exploration.
As a young man, Bølling used the prize money from a design competition to purchase woodworking equipment and began making a variety of wooden figures. Originally created as gifts for his wife and close friends, the figures proved so popular that he eventually began producing and selling them.
His wooden figures were typically constructed from simple turned solid-wood elements, combined with materials such as natural hair and cord to create distinctive characters with remarkably few components. Some of his designs were produced by the Danish manufacturer Ørskov & Co. during the 1960s. In recent years, Danish brand ARCHITECTMADE has reissued several of Hans Bølling’s classic wooden figures.
Strit is characterised by its exaggerated large nose, tousled hair and rounded wooden body, giving the figure a distinctive and humorous personality. Its movable body and limbs allow a wide range of expressions to be conveyed through simple changes in posture, making it a representative example of Bølling’s ability to bring a sense of play into Danish modern design.
