這件作品屬於鋁質系列Aluminum Group，最早名稱為室內外系列Indoor-Outdoor Group。此系列的源自於建築師亞歷山大吉拉德Alexander Girard與艾羅薩里寧 Eero Saarinen在設計爾文米勒Irvan Miller的私宅時，發現當時的現代家具只為了室內用途而設計，沒有適合戶外或是花園的家具。查爾斯伊姆斯Charles Eames知道了這個消息，便試圖解決這個問題。在一趟飛行的旅程中，伊姆斯想到以某種材料繃於鋁件框架之上，或許是一個方式。
他希望這件作品採用橫跨於金屬架上的軟材質，他與吉拉德共同開發了一種新的織品，採用人造纖維，並以三層的結構增加強度與耐久度，然而結果並不理想，他們後來又嘗試了多種織品仍未成功，最終放棄了戶外版本。現在這件椅子由德國的Vitra公司生產。
