Description

The PH Snowball was designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958 and made its first appearance that same year at the “Glass, Light and Colour” exhibition held at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art in Copenhagen, now known as Designmuseum Danmark. It was exhibited alongside the PH 5 and other lighting designs. The Snowball attracted relatively little attention at the time and was subsequently set aside. It was not until 1983 that Louis Poulsen reintroduced the design and placed it into production.

The Snowball shares certain structural similarities with the PH Louvre and Contrast lamps. It is composed of eight layered reflectors made of white-painted aluminium, forming an elongated, nearly spherical silhouette. The shades conceal the internal light source and prevent the bulb from entering the viewer’s direct line of sight, thereby reducing glare. The upper shades direct part of the light outward into the surrounding space, while the lower shades primarily cast light downwards, continuing Poul Henningsen’s design philosophy of creating soft, even and glare-free illumination.

When illuminated, light gradually filters through the eight tiers of reflectors, giving the otherwise solid metal structure an almost transparent and weightless appearance. A soft, even glow forms around the lamp, making it resemble a snowball suspended in mid-air.
