Description

This minimalist coffee table was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 as part of the comprehensive furniture program he created for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The hotel, which opened on July 1, 1960, is widely regarded as one of the most significant examples of Gesamtkunstwerk in modern design history, where architecture, interiors, furniture, and lighting were all conceived as a unified whole under Jacobsen’s direction.

The table features the star-shaped aluminum base commonly used in Jacobsen’s SAS hotel furniture series, sharing the same design language as the contemporaneous Egg Chair and Swan Chair. The radiating metal base supports the tabletop in a structure that appears both light and stable, reflecting the clarity and rational order characteristic of modern design in the 1950s.

The tabletop is finished in finely grained rosewood veneer, whose deep, expressive wood grain contrasts with the cool tone of the metal base. This juxtaposition of wood and metal was a material combination Jacobsen frequently employed throughout the interiors of the SAS Royal Hotel.

Rosewood-top versions were primarily produced during the 1960s and 1970s, when Danish furniture exports were at their peak and rosewood was widely regarded as a premium furniture material. As timber prices rose in the 1970s and resources became more limited—later compounded by international trade restrictions on rosewood—the material gradually disappeared from mainstream furniture production. As a result, early rosewood examples are now particularly sought after in the vintage design market.

The table series was produced in several sizes and tabletop formats, including round and square coffee tables. With later adjustments to the product line, Fritz Hansen has discontinued the square coffee table version, making early examples comparatively less common today.
